Health and Safety recommendations
on smoking in the workplace
Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS). Smoking is a health hazard, both
to smokers and non smokers. Exposure to ETS is a cause of lung cancer,
nasal cancer and heart disease. It also aggravates conditions such
as asthma.
The Health and Safety Commission are currently consulting on implementation
of an Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) on smoking at work. The code
will be based on the welfare provisions of existing health and safety
legislation.

The Health and Safety Executive recommends a minimum period of
three months’ notice before implementation.
